por Chico Marques Kenny Burrell nasceu em Detroit, Michigan, em 31 de Julho de 1931, há exatos 85 anos. Quando era jovem, pensou em tocar banjo e ukelele como seu pai, ou em cantar no coro da Igreja como sua mãe. Mas como seu irmão mais velho tocava saxofone, ele começou a aprender guitarra para poder acompanhá-lo. Burrell cresceu na cena musical de Detroit juntamente com craques como Donald Byrd, Yusef Lateef, Milt Jackson, Tommy Flanagan e vários outros. Sempre que algum artista de renome passava pela cidade, acabava levando com ele algum jovem artista promissor da cidade. Burrell deixou Detroit em 1950 a convite de Dizzy Gillespie, que o viu tocar, gostou do que viu e ouviu, e o contratou de imediato para uma tournée. Mas ao final da tournée, Burrell deixou a banda de Gillespie para estudar música na Wayne State University, onde se formou em 1955. Substituiu Herb Ellis no Oscar Peterson Trio, e seguiu para Nova York, onde fixou residência, e deu início a uma carreir...

Saxophonist Branford Marsalis, oldest son of New Orleans pianist and educator Ellis Marsalis, released an album with his quartet this week. He spoke to weekends on All Things Considered host Guy Raz about the failings of modern jazz, his hopes for the next generation and leaving New York City to move back to the South. BRANFORD MARSALIS: I have trouble naming albums, so when it gets time for the pressing of the CD, my managers call me and say, "All right, we're time-sensitive here. We need a title now."
